Taking on the men at drifting
NOW you can learn how to burn rubber in style at a drift clinic and be part of the fast and furious crowd. At the marching field next to the Palapes Centre in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), there is no shortage of jokes about women drivers. But a participant Leona Chin didn’t seem to mind, as she was out to prove them wrong.
True enough the 21-year-old had the last laugh after executing a perfect figure eight in a seemingly out-of-control style of driving. This plucky lass has been drifting since aged 18 and her instructor Ser Meng Hoi is one of the top three drifters from the D1GP Malaysia series last year. Though she is aware that this drift session is only for beginners, Chin said she took part in it because she wanted to “play in a safe area.” When asked if she was aware that she was wowing the spectators, Chin only giggled in reply. Drifting, as the term suggests, is a style of driving where the car is forced to oversteer while lapping a tight corner. It is a spectacular display of vehicle control and guts, and drifters from advanced levels are known to spin rides centimetres within each other in a seeming attempt to bump each other off the track. But one of the four Defying Grip instructors 28-year-old Ee Yoong Cherng who was conducting the drift clinic at the UiTM marching field that day did not allow that with the 12 participants. He reiterated that the session was strictly for beginners. “It’s a kick-start course for those with zero experience. This is when we feed them with the basics of hand-and-foot techniques. Participants will be introduced to the roundabout drift and figure eight where they will learn how to change directions. It will be a low speed affair of 60 to 70kph using the first and second gear,” he said. And doing it correctly is something that Ee emphasised as he addressed his class of adrenaline-seeking pupils who must have been in a bout of daredevil manoeuvres earlier in the session. “Whatever you do, don’t let go of the steering. All those drifting videos where you see the drivers doing such things are wrong. If you do that, you lose control. Who knows where your car is facing at the moment the steering is let loose. You might crash,” warned Ee who has four years experience in show and competitive drifting. Raring to go for the next round, the class murmurs in agreement before heading to their cars. When asked about what he thinks of Ee’s brand of instruction, first-timer Timothy Hardie Ketit, 32, said he was patient and knowledgeable. Ketit, a seasoned autocross driver who met Ee in November in Malacca said he wanted to learn drifting since then. “When you are known as a ‘drifter’, it makes you feel proud. It gives you class. Compared to autocross, you feel the adrenaline more. It’s like freezing the moment when your car goes sideways,” Ketit said when asked on why he chose to attend the clinic. Contrary to perception, one does not need to have a fancy sports car to be part of the clinic. Ee said the basic requirement is a rear-wheel drive car with limited slip differential (LSD). Each participant was charged RM120 and you have to bring the car. Clinics are usually conducted at a ratio of one instructor to three participants and held from 9.30am to 6.30pm at announced locations. The next drift clinic will be held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Bangi on Sunday. Those interested call Ee at
