High on speed

FOR the longest time, the words ‘girls’ and ‘cars’ rarely appeared in the same sentence – motor sports was a man’s world entirely, and the only girls that appeared on track were those in mini skirts, holding flags and waving.
Well, times have changed – and there are women out there who can more than hold their own behind racing wheels.

Twelve Malaysian girls are setting out to break the stereotype that girls don’t belong on the track. Over 600 women joined the Red Bull Female Driver Search campaign, and the final 12 have been shortlisted.
In the past few weeks, these 12 girls from all over Malaysia have been introduced to the track and are undergoing selections to determine which three of them will make the all-girl team in next year’s Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race.
The girls have been drilled on engine knowledge, gone through fitness training and driven on the Sepang International Circuit (where the race will be held).
Car enthusiast Leona Chin Lyweoi, 21, walks restlessly around the pit area, impatiently waiting for her turn to get into the Satria GTI, which the girls will race in next year.

Snapping pictures of everything – helmets, the cars’ engines, her fellow competitors and the track, Leona briefly mentions that she is studying business in KDU college, but her demeanour changes completely when the subject of cars comes up.
“I drift. My boyfriend is my theoretical consultant and has taught me how to tune my own car to compete better in races, but I’m a better driver,” says the Subang Jaya girl jokingly.
“I’m very, very enthusiastic. I love the automobile industry. I’ve followed the Formula One championship and drifting competitions. I can tell which stunts in Tokyo Drift were faked,” says Leona cheekily.
When she isn’t studying or racing, Leona is online checking out drifting videos or playing car racing games at the video arcade.
“I race at least once a week. My Nissan 200sx serves me well, and I can’t wait to be a real race car driver,” says Leona, whose friends are mostly guys.
Puteri Ayu Jasmin grew up surrounded by boys. Her brothers and cousins were all car enthusiasts, and they were the main reason she got interested in motor sports.

Azrin Zulkifli manages mini-bike events, but always wanted to be a race car driver.
|
“I hung out with boys a lot. All they every talked about was cars and football. So eventually I got interested in both, and it has been my dream since I was very young to be a race car driver,” says the 24-year-old, who works in event management.
“It gives you confidence when guys go ‘wow’ when they find out that you’re into cars and that you know your stuff,” says Puteri.
Her most memorable racing incident was at last year’s drifting grand prix (D1GP), where famous drifter Keichi Tsuchiya was present.
“I sat in the car next to him. It was so exciting, I have wanted to relive that feeling ever since!” she enthuses.
Puteri, who switched from her first car, a Satria1.3, to a Perodua Gen2, says that guys’ negative perception towards women drivers is one of the reasons she is determined to break the stereotype.
She is definitely a car aficionado; her fixation with her car extends to trusting no one else to wash it.
“I don’t trust anyone but myself with my car. I have different types of cloth for different parts of my car, and I enjoy doing it myself.”
Azrin Zulkifil, who also hails from Subang, runs a mini-bike business and tunes the bikes herself, as well as her own car.
“I organise events like mini bike competitions, and I also manage a garage that deals with bikes,” says Azrin.

Her need for speed has been in her blood since she was in her teens. She loves watching races just to observe drivers’ individual styles.
“Driving is more than just about getting to your destination. There’s a style to it, and a good race car driver needs skill, and a lot of training,” says the 22-year-old.
Her passion is speed – and being in this competition is bringing her closer to her dream of racing professionally.
“You have to be brave, fit, healthy, and patient. It can’t be an easy job, but I’m ready to take it on,” says Azrin.
Nazerithy Jali wanted to be a policewoman her whole life, but her mother talked her out of it and now she is a dental assistant in Johor Bahru.
However, Nazerithy is living out her secret dream (one which she will only tell her mother about if she is selected to the team) – becoming a race car driver.
“I am headstrong and stubborn. I think this will help me out on the track,” says the Sarawak native, who drives a Proton Savvy.
Youngest participant Zurinee Zainal, 20, has been interested in motor sports since she was in secondary school.
“It all started when my brother and I modified our family car – we turned it into a Kancil turbo!” shares Zurinee, who hails from Setapak.
“During these few weeks, I’ve learned a lot. Driving is not just about stepping on the gas pedal but you have to know how to handle your car behind the wheel,” says Zurinee, who is doing a degree in quantity surveying.
The girls have been given a course on defensive driving – which teaches them how to drive fast, but at the same time keeping it safe for other drivers on the track.
“Cars used to be just a hobby, but now I want to make it my career. My family is rooting for me and they will be supporting me all the way. Something like this doesn’t always happen and it’s great chance for us women!” she says, referring to the female driver search.
It isn’t long before the group of girls sitting around in the pit area of Sepang circuit are summoned for yet another briefing on the cars – all of them immediately jump up and hurriedly follow their trainers to the track.
Girl power
IN June, a nationwide search for female race drivers garnered applications from over 600 girls (aged 18 to 30) keen to live out their little girl dreams of becoming race car drivers.
Twelve girls were shortlisted from the 600, and are currently undergoing a training programme to teach them about car engines, defensive driving, track familiarisation and go-kart racing,
The Merdeka Millennium Endurance race was established in 2000 and is the first locally organised 12-hour endurance race. This year’s event will be held again at Sepang Circuit from Aug 23 to 25, and is expected to attract a full grid of 77 cars and 231 drivers.
During the event this year, three girls will be selected from the line-up of finalists to compete in next year’s race.
For a full year, they will be groomed under the current all-female racing team, professional racers Deanna Yusoff, Kiki Nurul Alis, Phillipa Yoong, and Hiroko Nakamura.
The girls will be driving standard Satria GTIs, and the race lasts 12 hours (they will rotate drivers within this time).
